Geez... Slack vs FreeBSD.. .that's old school... i should go find the post! Nowadays I mostly use either CentOS, Ubuntu or Arch Linux. CentOS is mostly for servers. I have some Ubuntu servers and some FreeBSD servers. My desktop and laptop run Arch. I would seriously recommend Arch if you like the do-it-yourself slackware stuff. It is the fastest distro I've used... including gentoo. It has excellent package management like gentoo but it's mosly i686(or x86_64) compiled. It has rolling released so you never have to upgrade your release version. Give it a try. The forums and IRC channel are happy to help if you're willing to help yourself.
